Making the transition to school.
Here at Lauriston we value our transition programme and know that entering school is a really big deal!
Our aim is to make the transition from the pre-school environment, whether it be home, pre-school, kindergarten, PORSE, play centre or any of the other wonderful settings as smooth and as stress free as possible.
Each family and little person is unique and we will set up and structure the transition process to suit all. We encourage families to visit us at school with the children to have a look around the classes and to meet the Lauriston team. Following this we organise five to six school visits prior to a child turning five. For some children five visits is plenty and for others a few more are required. We are very flexible and can talk about this throughout the transition process.
During the school year as we lead up to children entering school we hold a Pre-entry information evening for parents. This is an opportunity to come along to school (child free) and meet other parents who have children starting school around the same time, receive a tour of the school and listen to some information about not only the school, but how to make the transition process enjoyable for all.

What we do at Lauriston to support transition:
- Meet with the family prior to starting visits.
- Hold pre-entry information evenings for parents.
- Encourage children and families to attend our Monday Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP) session and local coffee group.
- Set up five to six school visits.
- Negotiate the school start dates.
- Provide families and children information leaflets and transition booklets that can be read at home and taken along to Early Childhood Education settings. E.g. The transition book written by the New Entrant/Year 1 children, designed specifically for our little people.
- Liaise with ECE settings.
- Set up a 'big buddy' for reading sessions that happen each day at Lauriston.
- Ensure that the children have met all classroom and school staff prior to starting school.
- Support families in filling out enrollment and bus forms.
